The American Kennel Club first recognized the breed in 1885 and placed it in the Toy group due to its small size. Adults weigh about 18 pounds and stand less than a foot high. However, obesity is a growing health concern in these dogs, which has been shown to contribute to other health problems.
Some scientists believe that the Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dogs and that they have been around since 400 BC. They originated from Asia and were common pets in Buddhist monasteries in Tibet.
In general the Pug is quite healthy, but it is prone to several respiratory problems due to its short snout. In hot weather this dog often has problems breathing, and even just sleeping it makes snorting sounds because it can be hard for this dog to breath due to its muzzle conformation.
Another common Pugs have is with their eyes. Their eyes are very protruded and because of this are much more prone to trauma.
If you are thinking about buying a Pug as a pet, make sure you buy from a reputable breeder, and have the puppy examined by the veterinarian right after purchase to make sure you bought a healthy one.
