I’m going on a 12 hours road trip over the holidays. I travel by car. My two pugs hate traveling in the car. They would both cry for the whole 12 hours. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again. Thanks!

1. Crate them while traveling.
2. Try some "Rescue Remedy"

Take frequent breaks and give them some toys and a slight sedative – a little alcolhol or something that will take the edge off nothing to make them sick or drunk.
Talk to your vet about getting a mild sedative for them. Or you can give them Banadryl as a sedative.

I use an herbal remedy for my dogs, it is available at health food stores and it really works. It is called Bach’s Rescue Remedy 11. You put a few drops under their tongue, or in their water. It is safe and tastless, odorless too. I think it is the only thing I have tried that actually worked really, I have large dogs so it should help them. Also have you considered putting them in crates for the ride with toys and water? I mean, you’d let them out for walks at rest stops and stuff, but maybe they’d feel more secure,you could even put them together, but I suppose it depends on what you drive and the space you have. I also drive long trips with my dogs, and some things that help are having chew toys or bones and also shutting the radio off when they are in the car.

DO NOT give them "A little alcohol" as the idiot up there suggested!
A lady I know that raised and bred Great danes always gave them a benadryl. For a small dog a half benadryl will probably work. If you want to go all out you can take the dogs to the vet and they can actually write a script for some doggie downers. Seen it done before!

My question is why do they hate traveling by car? My dogs LOVE it, but I’ve taken them in the car since they were babies. So i guess just try to make it fun for them, give them treats, bring there favorite blanket to lay on and let them out every couple of hours to go potty and run around to play. If they still hate it then leave them home with a dogysitter, its not worth their misery to travel to gramas for christmas!

Try short trips with each of them until you make the big 12 hour trip. Maybe that will help them cope.
I have a pug and have the same problem…My vet told me to give her a 1/2-1 a dramamine. makes them sleepy and relaxed….Good luck!
